How this calculator works

Which ayanamsa is used?

Lahiri (Chitrapaksha), the standard for Indian sidereal astrology. It is applied to tropical Sun, Moon and ascendant positions to give sidereal longitudes.

Why does birth time matter so much?

The ascendant moves roughly one degree every four minutes, so a few minutes can shift your lagna into the next rasi. Moon sign and nakshatra change more slowly but still depend on the time.

How accurate is it?

Sun positions are accurate to a few arc-minutes and the Moon to roughly 0.1 to 0.3 degrees, which is enough for rasi, nakshatra and tithi except within about 20 arc-minutes of a boundary. Values are shown to arc-minutes only, never beyond the stated tolerance.

Is my birth data stored?

No. Everything is computed in your browser and never sent to a server.
